Vesuvius is a glance of unusual beauty in the landscape of the Gulf, especially when seen from the sea with the city in the background. A famous picture postcard image taken from the Hill of Posillipo did enter right in the collective imagination of the city of Naples, although by locals is considered a stereotype like the famous Sun-sea-mandolin. Not as a stereotype, but more important, it is the primacy that Vesuvius holds globally: it is the volcano that was first studied systematically.
